What to buy in your situation

Straight answers, not "it depends".

One cat, dry food, you work out of the house
Buy the Petlibro camera feeder. Get the camera version only if you will open the app. If not, save the money.
Two cats, same dry food
Use two feeders at opposite ends of a room, or one made for two cats. One big hopper turns into a race, and the faster cat wins. See the automatic cat feeder for 2 cats guide.
Two cats, different foods
A microchip-gated feeder like the SureFeed is the one that solves it. Timers cannot.
Wet food
Use a tray feeder for a day or two, never a long trip. Read the wet-food guide.
Away for a week
Dry food, plug-in power plus battery backup, and a camera. Then ask someone to visit, because the feeder is the backup and the person is the plan. Water matters too: see the automatic cat feeder and water dispenser guide.
Tight budget
If you are home most days, a gravity feeder is the simplest thing that works: see our guide to the best cat food dispenser. A basic timed tray feeder covers one or two meals.

Do you need an automatic cat feeder with a camera?

Buy the camera if you travel, work long days, or feed more than one cat and want to see who ate. It answers the question a timer can't: did the food actually come out, and did the cat eat it.

Skip it if you are home most days. You pay more for a feature you will rarely open, and a camera on a feeder also needs Wi-Fi and a bit of setup. Of our picks, the Petlibro camera feeder and the Oneisall are both camera models (the oneisall has two cameras, per its listing). Check the current listing, since camera and non-camera models can share names.

How we choose

I have run a few automatic feeders myself, but not every one in this guide, and I won't pretend otherwise. Where I haven't used one hands-on, the pick comes from full spec sheets, the recurring complaints in owner reviews, and what each design is actually built to do.

That means we can tell you a hopper has a camera, how it is powered and what owners keep reporting. It does not mean I can promise it will never jam. When a claim is only a spec-sheet claim, I say so.

Always check the live listing. Models change quietly between batches. Prices and specs here were last compared on the date shown under each table.

Questions people ask

What is the best automatic cat feeder?

For most single-cat homes eating dry food, a Wi-Fi feeder with a camera and battery backup, such as the Petlibro camera feeder, is the safest pick. For wet food, a tray-based timed feeder is the only realistic option, and it only suits short stretches.

Are automatic cat feeders safe to leave for a week?

Use one as a backup, not a replacement for a person. A feeder can jam, lose power or lose Wi-Fi. For a week away, pick dry food, battery backup and a camera, and have someone check in.

Can an automatic feeder handle wet food?

Only tray-style models with timed lids can, and wet food should not sit out for long. We cover which ones are worth buying in the wet food guide.

Can two cats share one automatic feeder?

Two cats of similar appetite on the same dry food can. If one eats fast, steals food or needs a different diet, use two feeders or a microchip-gated one such as the SureFeed.

Have you tested every feeder yourself?

No. I have run a few automatic feeders myself. Where I have not used one hands-on, the page says so, and the pick comes from full spec sheets cross-checked against owner reviews.

Feeding wet food?

Timed lids and ice packs can cover a few meals, but not a week. See which wet-food feeders are worth buying and what to do on longer trips.
